Highlights of the Borghese Gallery

The Borghese Gallery is housed in the Villa Borghese, a beautiful mansion dating back to the 16th century. To this day it is still one of the most renowned art museums in the world, offering a rare opportunity to see some of the world's most impressive private collection’s in their original setting.

The museum's collection started with Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1579–1633), one of the most knowledgeable and ruthless art collectors of his day; he was also the nephew of Pope Paul V. Scipione Borghese was even an early patron of Bernini and an avid collector of works by Caravaggio. The museum boasts an impressive list of artists from Bernini, Canova to Caravaggio. Delve into the collection and see Bernini's captivating 'Apollo and Daphne,' Canova's 'Pauline Bonaparte,' Caravaggio's 'St. Jerome' and 'David with the Head of Goliath.'

The Galleria Borghese is made up of twenty rooms across two floors, divided into two parts - the ground-floor showcasing sculptures, Roman floor mosaics, and over-the-top frescoes - while upstairs houses the picture gallery. Many of the sculptures are displayed in the spaces for which they were intended, including works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini starting with early works such as the “Goat Amalthea with Infant Jupiter and Faun.”

Step outside the Gallery and bask in the tranquil Villa Borghese Gardens leaving you feeling of a million miles away from the bustling city. Decorated with perfectly manicured lawns, lakes, towering monuments and monumental fountains this is the perfect place to escape from the city.
