Complete Tour Description
Discover a darker side of Florence on our original storytelling tour, exploring the city under the cover of darkness and unearthing the mysteries and legends that lurk beneath its Renaissance splendor. For two hours our expert, English-speaking storytellers will take you on an exploration of a side to Florence rarely seen by visitors. A time before Michelangelo and Botticelli, before Il Duomo dominated the skyline, when the city was under almost constant siege from invading armies and from warring families within its own walls.
Our Florence Night Tour takes a look into Medieval Florence, leading you around some of the city’s most iconic sights and some areas you might have overlooked before. We’ll visit the Ponte Vecchio bridge and Piazza Signoria, telling tales that are worlds away from those you’ll hear from architects and art historians.
At Palazzo di Bianca Cappello, you’ll hear one of Florence’s most fascinating love stories about a Grand Duke who decked out a palace for his mistress and built a tunnel directly to his own home. The cause of their untimely deaths has only recently come to light with the help of modern science so you’ll get the full story from our expert guide.
As you venture through the streets of Florence your guide will point out alleys that were once deemed “too dark” and closed as a matter of public safety (a measure you’ll appreciate when you learn about what happened in the dark alleyways of Medieval Florence). You’ll hear about the family feuds that set Florence on edge such as the battle to the end fought by two brothers. Your guide will point out tall buildings that would once have held pots of boiling oil on their roofs for defense against invading neighbors and public spaces where traitors and those accused of treason were burned, their bodies hung out in public for all to see.
Our Florence Night Tour presents a less glossy image of the city, with tales and legends never told in the corridors of the Accademia, Uffizi or Duomo. And with an expert local storyteller to lead your adventure, you’ll come away with a chilling vision of what this beautiful city was like in the dark years before the light of the Renaissance.
To take the edge off, we’ll finish our tour with a stop at a local gelateria for your choice of Florence’s famous gelato. Take some time to mull over all you’ve heard and quiz your guide a little more on the history of Florence. On this no-holds-barred tour we leave no stone unturned.
